's get you some some of the morning headlines. the biggest one being president obama planning to meet with congressional leaders at 3:00 p.m. eastern time today in a last ditch effort to avoid the fiscal cliff. the house majority leader eric cantor is now telling members to be prepared to work through january 2nd. both sides still far apart, however, on taxes and spending cuts. senate majority leader harry reid says prospects for a deal by monday are still unlikely. there was a lot of movement, motion for not a lot of action. >> where were you yesterday? >> i was here. we were together. >> were we ever with our -- no. but there were duelling senate leaders just -- first mcconnell came on. and he said -- did you see either one of those? >> i did. >> did you see harry reid? >> there's no chance of -- >> but if you think -- i want to rise above. there was so little of anything close to that yesterday other than just the -- i mean, people at home must be like, it's the endless blaming and finger pointing and, you know, when one side says it's all the other side's fault and all the other s

that fiscal cliff. president obama will be meeting with congressional leaders later today. danielle leigh joins us. >> that meeting in many ways a last opportunity for the president and congressional leaders to reach a deal and get something done before this year is over. if this meeting is unsuccessful it could seal this country's fate, as some developments yesterday. house members no longer on stand by. ready to come back sunday. to take a vote. when these tax cuts expire just about every worker is going to see their paycheck reduced. it's going to eliminate unemployment extensions and initiate spending cuts across the board. >> how will people see this in their paychecks and in their taxes? >> workers will feel it immediately in their paychecks. those paychecks will be reduced. those making 40,000, 50,000 are going to see 1700 less a year. it continues as the wages increase. so people are going to feel this in their pocketbooks. >> all right, danielle, thank you. >>> last night on the rachel maddow show, debbie stab nau talked about the looming fiscal cliff. >> i'm not sure what's next

with these talks says that president obama is not going to be offering anything new during this afternoon's meeting. he's essentially going to be saying what he said at the white house last friday when he called on congress to put forth a package that would extend bush era tax cuts for those making $250,000 or less, extend unemployment insurance benefits, as well as stave off some of those deep spending cuts that are set to go into effect. the president is going to make the argument that he believes this can pass through both houses, but, of course, there is a big question mark over that. i have been speaking with republican aides on the hill who say house republicans are really waiting to see what the senate does at this juncture before they weigh in on anything that the president might say during today's meeting. but, of course, we will have to wait and see what actually happens. we're hoping the congressional leaders will talk to us and we'll have more information about what happened. >> it seems the political dynamics essentially in this meeting are -- he's not putting anything new on the table

forward. but president obama i am told by this source essentially said to everyone at the meeting, look, if you put this to a vote in the senate and in the house, he believes it would pass. he gave mcconnell and reid about a day basically to come up with their own proposal, something that they believe would make it through both chambers, but interestingly, mcconnell said that he was optimistic in the wake of that meeting. reid said that he found the meeting to be constructive as well as did nancy pelosi. speaker boehner seemed to have a slightly different take, basically saying, look, we've already passed legislation in the house to deal with the sequester, to deal with some of these issues so why not revisit what was passed in the house? but the bottom line is the words that are coming out of this meeting, constructive, optimistic. there seems to be a little bit of movement. you always hesitate to say that because, of course, these talks could become derailed at any minute, but president obama set to address the press and the nation hopefully to give us a little bit of a better sense o

for americans. also extending on unemployment. here is what president obama had to say on that point on "meet the press." take a listen. >> i was modestly optimistic yesterday but we don't yet see an agreement. now the pressure is on congress to produce. if they don't, what i have said is that in the senate, we should go ahead and introduce legislation that would make sure middle class taxes stay where they are. there should be an up and down vote. everybody should have the right to vote on it. if republicans don't like it, vote no. i think there's a majority support to make sure they are held. >> two points. first, he is saying if it passes the senate, he's calling on house speaker boehner to put his back up proposal to a vote. there's a big question over weather speaker boehner will do that. also, embedded in the president's answer there is a window into the white house and democrat strategy, to leave republicans holding the ball at the end of the process if the legislation goes down for defeat, it will go down for defeat on their watch. in essence, adding to the pressure of them to get som

. for president obama's part, he is using his bully pulpit to try pressure lawmakers to act. he sat down with david gregory today, and that will appear on "meet the press" tomorrow. he came out with certain words for lawmakers in terms of getting something done before the all important january 1st deadline. take a listen. >> the american people are watching what we do here. obviously their patience is already thin. this is deja vu all over again. america wonders why it is that in this town for some reason, you can't get something done in an organized timetable. why everything has to always wait to the last minute. now we are at the last minute. and the american people are not going to have any patience for a politically self inflicted wound to our economy. >> this is a tactic that president has used before. to rally the public. it did work before. but this point, we are less than three days out. it's not clear it's having an impact. if we do in fact go over the fiscal cliff, there will be plenty of blame to go around, the poles show that most of the blame will be on republicans. however

on the hill and there's a lot of optimism that came from the talks yesterday. of course, president obama hosted congressional leaders at the white house and they left that meeting and many said that it was constructive and they were optimistic that a deal could get done and i've been talking to my sources today and that same optimism isn't really present right now. there's more skepticism about a deal getting done and it is still very early in this process and this is a fluid situation so it could change on a dime, but that's what's going on behind the scenes and the white house monitoring clearly, what's happening. >> what's the president doing today? >> reporter: well, he doesn't have any events on his public schedule and he does have an industry with david gregory from "meet the press." other than that, we don't have a readout of what's happening and we're hoping to get more information as the day wears on about what, specifically, he's done and how he's been engaged in these talks, but right now my sources at the white house are not reading out any of the discussions that may or may
